My work follows the traces of mankind. In particular, it is the shapes and structures we make and place within the environment that interest me the most. Do these constructions sit harmoniously within their immediate surroundings or is there an apparent disconnect? What effects do our interactions, intersections and interventions cause? Each piece addresses a different issue, connections to be made and problems to be solved before harmony can be restored. By developing and understanding my practice through painting, drawing, writing and the making of three-dimensional models, each translation uncovers new details, adding layers to the original idea. Through this subjective approach, I utilise paint and other materials, such as wire and thread, to explore the tactile and textural qualities of our interaction with the environment, while highlighting our influence through an element that doesn’t quite belong in a ‘traditional’ painting. While my ideas are very much about the actions of humans, the figure does not feature within any of my images. It is not about the individual but a reflection of the collective traces our species leaves. |
